Kythorn 2, 1370: High = 50, Low = 30 No precipitation Calm. Cloudy. Shore leave for crew. Dexter and Tristan complete training (to 7th Priest & 6th Wizard), Dexter rolls (7+2)/2 for 7th level Priest HP bringing his HP to 70.5. Tristan rolls (4+2)/2 for 6th level wizard bringing his HP to 44.5. Aid is cast on Steve and he summons a gargoyle. Henkles, Dexter, Tristan, Brogan, the gargoyle and Darius head back to the mine after dark and use Stone Shape to rig a block & tackle above the shaft. They camp at the top.
Henkles is lowered down the shaft first while the gargoyle flies down. There are some huge centipedes munching on spider guts in the room below. They shy away from Henkles light but mostly stay focused on spider guts. The rest of the party comes down. The party heads NW for about 350' before coming to a 30x30 room filled with webs. They toss a rock in and 8 giant spiders rush out. Violence happens. Three spiders manage to flee. 3250xp to Brogan, Darius, Dexter, Henkles and Tristan Once the webs were cleared (with a Flaming Sphere), the room had a table and chairs, some equipment handles and a pile of rubble with some green corstal mixed in. There were 2 exits, W and NE. Dexter found tracks suggesting the spiders went W, so the party chose NE.
After about 40-50 feet, rough side passages split off, about 4' wide and 6' high. Both are stairs leading up. Henkles keeps on the straight and not-so-narrow.
About half of us are past the corridor when we hear a loud, sharp chirp from the left side. We wait with weapons drawn ... about a minute later, it sounds again, further up the stairs. Henkles, Brogan and Tristan go to investigate. The stairs end in a blank wall after about 75 feet. A small dark something is creeping on the floor. It has two friends.
When Henkles gets within 30', he sees what seem to be giant crickets. Brogan gets closer to look at the wall, and the crickets flee downstairs past Henkles, missing him. Darius takes a cricket to the face for 1 damage. Brogan is pretty damn certain there's no hidden door at the top.
Henkles, Brogan and Tristan check out the opposite side and find it quite similar except for the lack of crickets. Continuing the corridor, about 20' further there are level side passages. Henkles looks left and sees centipedes munching on lichen; they avoid the light. Again, the corridor goes about 75' and stops. Likewise, the opposite side. Then another 20' down the corridor, stairs down on either side that go about 75' and stop. The pattern of three pairs of side shafts - one pair up, one level, one down - repeats a while later, after which the main tunnel ends. The party doubled-back to the formerly web-filled room and headed NW. Henkles split off to go on DRG. Going back to the junction room, the party took the west tunnel, which gradually turned north. It was starting to turn NE when the encountered a massive gray ooze covering a 20' length of the tunnel. The party tried to play things cautiously with distance attacks, including the gargoyle. Brogan got to experiment with his exploding wern ammo (his 100gp globes do 5d4 damage in a 10'radius), but the party learned that huge oozes can hurt gargoyles. They changed tactics to having the gargoyle fly to the other side and bait the ooze away from the party while they attacked with conventional (cheap) ammo. Meanwhile, back on the ship Steve summoned a replacement gargoyle and sent it out to join the party. The original gargoyle's retreat was interrupted by the arrival of three giant spiders out of the darkness. They attacked the gargoyle and Steve unsummoned it, leaving the spiders and ooze with only each other to play with. The party finished them off with range weapons while they fought each other. 3660xp to Brogan, Darius, Dexter and Tristan The party continues along the tunnel, which turns NE, then east, and eventually comes to another web-filled room over 1000' beyond the previous room. The party decides to turn back at that point without exploring the room or leraning if it had any other exits. On the way back to the previous junction room, the part met up with Steve's second gargoyle.
On the ship, Ag hears a strange rumbling in the distance, like thunder except steady. Maybe mechanical. It may be slowly getting louder. He goes up to the deck, where it's louder. The sound seems to be coming from out at sea. The sky is too cloudy to allow vision. Ag alerts Steve.
