Star Chaser arrives in Fireshear Harbor at 2:00pm. No sign of the
Sea Vault yet.
While the Star Chaser is finding it's way to a dock, Ag, with
Mrap-M'rap flies ahead to speak with the harbormaster. Mrap-M'rap
stays outside. Ag learns that Star Chaser was last here years ago
and attempts to bribe harbor master to keep it that way, but
fails. A dwarf comes in and Ag leaves, then sneaks around to
listen in. The conversation suggests that the harbor master was
already bribed to report about the Star Chaser, which has not been
reported as arrived yet. Invisibly he follows the dwarf while
Mrap-M'rap flies above.
Ag sees the dwarf go into a Tinsmith's shop - Throlmo and Duarrin,
Tinsmiths - and sends Mrap-M'rap to report. Through the window he
sees the dwarf speak with one of the proprietors and then head out
back. Ag flies over the building and follows.
Meanwhile, the Star Chaser docks and the party goes ashore with
many boxes of supplies, loot, and the coronet. The only thing
that the party mentioned leaving behind was Tristan's skis.
Maanamere meets with the harbormaster and bribes him with a ring
to tell no one that anyone disembarked from the Star Chaser.
Darius goes to rent a wagon to take the party's things to the
gates of the city, Steve gets a guide and heads across town to
arrange pack animals, Dexter heads for the market to see about
buying berries. Staric remains on board and is left in charge of
the Star Chaser, but Maanamere keeps his captain's hat. Maanamere
takes the chest of silver pieces from Sweetie the Hag and leaves
it with Staric to pay wages.
Darius arranges a wagon for 3ep. By the time the wagon is loaded
up and the party leaves the docks, they can see familiar smoke on
the horizon.
Steve finds a stable and begins buying riding horses and mules.
He is approached by a friendly dwarf woman, Omagni,
Great-Granddaughter of Huarv Anraardrin, who invites Steve to have
his party join with her caravan for mutual protection. She is
wearing what may be a holy symbol, but Steve does not recognise
it. He defers an answer until his party arrives. While waiting
for the others, Steve buys 10 riding horses, 12 mules, and oats
for animal feed for 703gp.
Ag sees the dwarf he is following go into a deserted alley and
swoops in to backstab. The backstab succeeds but doesn't kill and
a short fight ensues. Ag manages to kill the dwarf and steal his
purse before anyone hears the noise.
420xp to Ag for ambushing Dofi, Nephew of Tholmi Karredakis
Henkles, Darius, Denyae and Maanamere wish Staric and the crew
farewell and begin escorting the wagon through the city. The Star
Chaser makes sail almost immediately. She is leaving the harbor
when the wagon moves out of sight.
After a few blocks, Henkles spots a watcher on a nearby rooftop
and sproings up to join him. The dwarf Henkles casts a spell on
Henkles, but it fails and Henkles counters with the Bolas of
Entanglement. Henkles knocks the dwarf out and Denyae, then
Darius show up to help. They strip the dwarf completely and leave
him tied up in an alley. Henkles takes everything, including the
dwarf's red underwear.
210xp to Henkles for the capture of Safoin, Great-Grandson of Hari
Yanvernakis
Loot from Safoin:
* Warhammer, +2
* Short bow, +2, Speed 1!
* Mundane Sap
* Mundane Dagger
* Potion, brown, green bottle, label on front reads "not the dangerous one"
* Potion, clear, blue bottle, label on front reads "the other potion lies"
* Cash: 3 100gp Corals, 5 10gp Fire Agates, 7gp, 5sp, 8cp
While waiting for the others to return, Maanamere and Tristan see
signs that someone invisible is on the wagon and fooling around
with the wagon. They try to intervene, but he leaps away to a
nearby rooftop with one of the boxes. The box included:
- Fire Resistance Potion from Moderf
- Speed Potion from Moderf
- Super-Heroism Potion from Kamon "Dark" Darkmountain
- Extra-Healing Potion from Kamon "Dark" Darkmountain
Maanamere and Tristan set about securing the boxes better but the
wagon's horses are suddenly set upon by a pack of feral dogs.
While Tristan Slows six of them, Maanamere realies he is shrugging
off a magical attack. A few moments later he hears the thump of
someone landing in the wagon and tries to go after the invisible
person while Tristan and the teamster take on the dogs. Darius,
Danyae, Mrap-Mrap and Henkles all arrive in the middle of the
fight. Darius (Flying), Mrap-M'rap (seeing invisible and flying),
and Henkles (bouncing) go after the invisible, bouncing dwarf
while Denyae and Maanamere help with the dogs. The remaining dogs
eventually run off, but not before doing serious harm to one of
the horses. Meanwhile Henkles catches and engages the dwarf,
who's invisibility has been dispelled by Darius and brings him to
.5 HP, at which point he surrenders.
1140xp to Darius, Denyae, Henkles, Maanamere and Tristan for 4
dead dogs and one live Throlmo, Son of Durdar Andiric
Denyae and Mrap-M'rap go off looking for the lost box, which they
eventually find smashed open but with nothing missing and return
to the wagon. Darius is able to partially cure the horse and
persuade the teamster to complete the trip. Meanwhile the guards
arrive and begin questioning people. Dwarf claims he is Throlmo,
Son of Durdar Andiric, an innocent member of the community who was
set apon by these strangers for no reason. Henkles insists
otherwise and volunteers to fund a Detect Lie spell to prove
his claims. Such a spell can't be arranged before morning, so the
guards take Henkles and Throlmo away for further questioning and
to wait for morning.
Everybody else resumes their journey to the stables where Steve,
Ag, and Dexter (who has obtained a small bag of fresh berries) are
waiting for them. The party discusses the situation and decides
to join forces with Omagni (who is a cleric of Waukeen as well as
a merchant, it's complicated) and her merchant band. Less than an
hour later they head out of the city with all of their things,
leaving Henkles to catch up later.
Under questioning, Henkles spills the beans about the Reverential
Coronet of Extroversion and the party's current activities and a
dozen guards are dispatched to bring the party and their stuff
back to the city (the Coronet was not specifically mentioned to
the guards who were dispatched - some people know how to be
careful with dangerous intel).
About an hour outside of the city, the guards overtake the caravan
and demand that Henkles's associates surrender to them and return to
Fireshear with their belongings. Omagni makes a big leap of faith
and does some fast talking to convince the guards that Henkles
party consists only of those people who were seen with him
escorting the wagon through the city. The guards collect Darius,
Denyae, Maanamere, Mrap-M'rap and Tristan, plus those items that
they claim as theirs, and head back to the city, arriving in the
late evening. Left behind are Ag, Dexter, Steve, the loot taken
from Dofi and Safoin, the Space Heater, 107 lbs of corstal, and
the Coronet.
Ag, Dexter and Steve explain the situation with the Coronet and
the followers of Abbathor to Omagni. She seems reasonably
understanding, but expresses concern about encountering the Sea
Vault at the mouth of the Ice Flow River, especially if the
Coronet is in the carvan at the time. Dexter takes the Coronet
and 107lb of corstal and flies off into the wilderness on his
Ebony Fly. He plans to fly 100 miles ahead and await the caravan.
They agree to hobble the mules in a particular way if it is safe
to return and another way if there is danger.
Steve and Ag bury all of the loot from Fireshear. Steve makes an
encoded map that he can use to find it at a later date.
The folks who returned to Fireshear see "Doc" watching them
outside the courthouse. Mrap-M'rap flies away to return to the
caravan with this news. Inside, the party discovers that the
folks from the Sea Vault have accused them of stealing the Coronet
and are demanding its immediate return. The party members are put
in cells and each person is questioned separately at length about
the "theft". Most of the questioning is about the current
location of the Coronet, but the party manages to stick with
variants on "I don't know and can I get a Detect Lie with
that?" Evidence suggests that Safoin and Throlmo are also
questioned. Eventually they are left in some cells to catch some
sleep in the few remaining hours before dawn.
