Ches 30, 1370: High = 30, Low = 15 Light precipitation (1.5" snow) starting @ 8:30am Wind gusting to 12 mph from the sea. Overcast. Denyae finishes training early, rolling a 5 for HP +3 for CON, bringing her HP to 72. Around 9:00am, Five-Fingers sends word that the Silent Travellers have just gone into Undermountain. The party charges off. Tristan, Darius, Staric, Maanamere, Alril, Kades, Deringa, Dexter, Henkles, Denaye, Steve, and Elvis the Giant Basset Hound entered Undermountain together through the Yawning Portal (12gp deducted from party treasure). Henkles and Elvis proceded through the null-magic room while the rest of the party had to work their way around it by answering the magic gates riddle. This delayed them but they caught up to Henkles and Elvis as they were following the Silent Traveller's scent northward. Around the Grim Door, Elvis's excited baying attracted the attention of 8 carrion crawlers. The party was able to dispatch them, but not before Tristan, Maanamere, Alril, Thades, Dexter, Henkles, and Denyae were paralyzed and Steve was stunned by a stray Color Spray, 3360xp to Alril, Darius, Denyae, Deringa, Dexter, Henkles, Maanamere, Staric, Steve, Kades, and Tristan, for attracting some monsters and killing them The party had to wait 40 minutes before everyone was able to move again, but no monsters showed up in the mean time. They continued north after Elvis until the came to the stairs down to the second level that the party had taken on their way up when they arrived from Nesme. (4/8/12 Game) Ag caught up to the party at the top of the stairs while Steve was using his Gargoyle Ring to summon a Gargoyle. Tristan? cast Invisibility on the gargoyle and sent him down the stairs as a scout. A few steps down, the gargoyle spotted a tripwire which had recently been strung across the stairs, apparently to cause someone to take a fall. The party decided to leave it in place. Nice. The gargoyle made it down to the first landing and continued down the second flight. It failed to notice the second tripwire, halfway down the second flight, but beeing a gargoyle, took no damage from the fall. After it reached the bottom, Henkles and Ag followed it down. Henkles removed the second tripwire. When they reached the base of the stairs to Level 2, Henkles and Ag spotted some St. Elmo's Hounds coming up a separate flight of stairs towards them. Ag immediately panicked and ran back up the stairs, which got the hounds excited, so they attacked Henkles. The party headed down to help, but decided to leave the gargoyle invisible. Henkles fought alone for two rounds (the gargoyle caught a little lightning damage from being too close), then the rest of the party, including Ag, showed up to help finish the fight. 1700xp to Henkles for killing the big one on his own 3440xp to Ag, Alril, Darius, Denyae, Deringa, Dexter, Henkles, Kades, Maanamere, Staric, Steve, and Tristan, for the rest of the fight The party (Elvis) was able to pick up the trail of the Silent Travellers again and followed it into a chamber filled with slain Carrion Crawlers. The damage to the crawlers suggested a party of adventurers and the damage seemed fairly recent (a few hours ago). It took a while to get Elvis back to tracking with so many exciting dead things to sniff, but he eventually proceeded West. The western corridor lead the party to a door, which opened on a vast room. Initially the party could not see beyond the 60' afforded by bullseye lanterns, but echoes indicated that the room extended far beyond that. They could also see a light in the distance, which seemed to illuminate several people working in a gazebo, 60' above ground level. That light went out almost immediately when a cry of "It's them!" came out of the darkness. Henkles through some light buttons around, which gave the party a better picture of the chamber and the large ziggurat in the middle (100' on a side, 60' high plus columns and small roof). It also confirmed that at least some of the Silent Travelers were on the ziggurat. Things got exciting after that. Many people were flying, lots of spells were cast, a lot of Silent Travelers died. The most spectacular was probably Ag's flying backstab overkill of Mirima Thadodarin, the party leader. AFAL took a lot of damage, but no losses. 9860xp to Ag, Alril, Darius, Denyae, Deringa, Dexter, Henkles, Kades, Maanamere, Staric, Steve, and Tristan for winning 1000xp to each member of AFAL, 500xp to each Shining Son/former member of the Silent Travelers, tentatively, for the final defeat of the Silent Travelers (story award) During the fight, the party discovered that the Silent Travelers had been assembling a wagon and loading it with sacks of einkorn on the south side of the ziggurat. The bodies and prisoners were sorted and inventoried and are here recorded: Thadidon Ramnardaphorask - Human Male, killed Full Plate Morning Star Dagger Bow, Short 12 +1 flight arrows 1 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's 4 Harbor Moons, 5pp, 4 Toals, 6sp, 10cp Marrin Rhaunrenardon - Human Male, surrendered Full Plate Magic Ring Bastard Sword +1 Bow, Short 8 +1 flight arrows 1 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's 14gp, 6sp, 9cp Gurugh Brightfire - Half-Orc Male, killed Plate mail Longsword, +1, +3 to backstab, (some other non-combat effects) Dagger Bow, Short 2 Potions 3 Harbor Moons, 4pp, 6 Toals, 12sp, 9cp Relask Radon - Human Male, killed Leather armor Long Sword Bow, Short 3 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's small magic fly statue 8gp, 9sp, 8cp Marraba Minarmas - Half-Elf Female, killed magic ring Long Sword Bow, Short Dagger of Hurting 3 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's 3 Shambos, 5 Harbor Moons, 5 Toals, 8gp, 3sp, 14cp Mirima Thadodarin - Human Female, killed Scale mail Medium shield Whip Morning Star Sling&bullets magic staff 1 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's silver holy symbol - Loviatar 2 Chrysoberyls, 4pp, 5gp, 11sp, 13cp Dhethun "Clumsy" Rhaunrimarkos - Human Male, knocked below zero Scale mail Guisarme, +1 6 Darts Long sword Footman's mace, +1 1 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's 4pp, 9sp, 5cp Earnartra Staros - Half-elf Female, killed 2 magic rings Dagger 6 Darts Black wooden wand with rose-like thorns, ending in a small shard of flint. 1 Woodtine, 4 Harbor Moons, 5gp, 5sp, 3cp Humtlkurgim Gindlpurmrun Pentetendrptusn - Gnome Male, surrendered +1 Scale Mail Medium shield Broadsword, +1 Short bow, +1 Voulge Footman's pick, +1 Dagger 1 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's 4 Harbor Moons, 4pp, 18 Toals, 12sp, 11cp Minlisa Goblinshadow - Human Female, killed Studded leather armor Medium shield, +1 Long sword Blowgun w/Barbed Darts Footman's pick, +1 2 Sleep Gas (M) from Aurora's 3 doses Urd's Teeth poison (12 doses for darts) 6 Toals, 11sp, 8cp Kapa Godsong - Human Female, surrendered +1 Studded Leather armor Small shield Hand crossbow, +1 Glaive 10ep, 16sp, 6cp The party began questioning the conscious survivors about what they were doing in that room but didn't get very far before a huge (10'd.) floating orb with one central eye and what looked like a huge mouth beneath it and 10 eyestalks came in through one of the southern doors, apparently attracted by the noise of battle. The party started thinking "Beholder" and panicking when Tristan picked up on the fact that the famous anti-magic effect of the central eye was not happenning. He then got in a good shot which eliminated the central eye too easily for a Beholder. Henkles charged and was able to confirm that it was actually a Death Kiss, a beholder-kin that uses extensible tentacle-mouths to drain blood from its victim, by getting caught by three of its mouths and drained to near zero hit points. The party hit the thing hard and fast, which it turns out is the best way to handle a Death Kiss and killed it before it finished Henkles. 500xp to Tristan for figuring out it probably wasn't a beholder 8000xp to Ag, Alril, Darius, Denyae, Deringa, Dexter, Henkles, Kades, Maanamere, Staric, Steve, and Tristan, for something slightly less scary than a beholder After that the party harvested a 70gp blood eye from the remains and looted everyone from the big figh except for Humtlkurgim and Kapa, the hirelings who surrendered. They resumed their questioning and learned that at the bottom of a 10' wide shaft in the top of the ziggurat was a 30'x30' chamber, in the center of which was a large jade snake statue. The snake statue apparently came to life and attacked anyone who stepped on the floor of the chamber, but was a solid jade statue the rest of the time. The Silent Travellers had been planning to lift it out with a block and tackle and use the wagon to transport it to the magic bridge to Nesme. Ag flew down and confirmed the description of the room, which was lined with shelves of bones from some many-armed snake creatures. The room showed signs of multiple lootings, but the statue was intact. The party made use of the Silent Travelers' block-and-tackle to bring the statue up and a Feather Fall to get it down the outside. After some heaving and sweating, they got it onto the back of the Silent Travelers' wagon and headed back towards the stairs to level 1 with the plan of hauling it up. Ag went on deep rear guard at this point. As the party was preparing to haul things up the first staircase, the snake statue came to life and faught it's way past the rear of the party. It took a lot of damage but kept right on going. As soon as it was past everyone, it took off towards the ziggurat room. Henkles: "I think we took down the second tripwire on our way back up, since there was no reason to leave it there then. Henkles will keep both wires unless someone else (Ag?) wants them." The party dropped off Kapa Godsong, Humtlkurgim Gindlpurmrun Pentetendrptusn, and Clumsy Rhaunrimarkos in the shield room so that they could leave via the Yawning Portal. Maanamere stayed with them to make sure they got out and didn't try to follow the party. The rest of the party headed to the Cooking Room with Marrin Rhaunrenardon. On the way to the Cooking Room, the party encountered 7 fire beetles in a corridor. 245xp to Alril, Darius, Denyae, Deringa, Dexter, Henkles, Kades, Staric, Steve, and Tristan, for squashin' bugs In the Cooking Room, the party threw the heads of the slain Silent Travelers into the boiling oil. The then explained to Marrin that they would do something similar to him if he ever made trouble for AFAL again. He made assurances that he would stay out of their way and way given a sword to defend himself with and told he was on his own getting out of the dungeon. He smirked and used the teleport maze in the Cooking Room to exit Undermountain as the party had done their first time in the room. After that they called it a day and headed home without further trouble.
Letter from Henkles to Morgath the Stable |

We took Silver Strike into Undermountain on a typical loot run. We encountered several groups of creatures, including St Elmo's Hounds, Carrion Crawlers, Fire Beetles and a Death Kiss. We also met a group of ruffians who ruthlessly attacked us. Silver Strike performed exceptionally well against all foes except the St Elmo's Hounds, where it's metal nature made striking them a shocking experience. Still, I did far more damage to them than they did to me. I think the Magic Missile effect might be a bit overkill, though. I was expecting something more like a Light spell on the target's visual organs, or perhaps Negative Plane Protection on the wielder. When I was fighting the St Elmo's Honuds I was quite glad it wasn't a Shocking Grasp effect. I fear that any creature powerful enough to be undamaged by a +2 weapon will also have enough magic resistance to negate the magic missile effect. Further experimentation is in order. I will send you another report when I have something more interesting to tell you. Henkles of Iriaebor |
